dress up in denim - 2009-05-26

"I have guys coming in here saying, 'I don't want to look like a banker anymore.'"

--Eric Goldstien, an owner of Jean Shop, a denim store in the meatpacking district of Manhattan. He is now dispensing advice on how to look like a "creative professional." (New York Times, Sunday 5/24/09)

I loved this, and the fact that it implied a fashion montage in which a line of suits comes in one door, and t-shirts and jeans come out the other. In a changing world (hasn't the world always been changing?), people's drive to reinvent is strong. And certainly, our clothes are one way we communicate with the world. One way to show our creativity. But I hope that the creativity at play here will be more than denim-deep. That people who are reinventing themselves are delving into their creative depths to find creative (entrepreneurial?) solutions to our current economy. And maybe they have an art class in their past to inspire them.
